Snapping like twigs

Posted on Sunday 4 September 2005

While I’m pilfering computer time where I can, I thought I’d pop out some simple thoughts I had while I was driving hither and thither about the land. Here’s one.

I was on 395 heading south. The two lane road opened so that my direction had a passing lane. The giant RV that had been blocking the flow of traffic, stacking almost 100 cars behind it because circumstances wouldn’t let anyone pass, didn’t get out of the way and move to the right like you’re supposed to.

Now it goes without saying that RVs are fucking evil. They are the worst parody of America all wrapped up in a shiny fume spewing truck hauling a full sized house around the highways of this beautiful land.

[note: Right about here is where I'd put the picture of the RV but can't because I can't get to my pictures. Imagine a beige box blocking your entire view of the road, the land, the sky. It is a kind of eclipse.]

What I guessed was happening at that moment where the RV wouldn’t turn was that a 150 year old woman was driving it so her husband could nap in the back, or maybe just watch TV through the satellite dish on the top of the thing, and she couldn’t turn the wheel to move right because if she did her frail dessicated withered arms would snap like dry twigs.

“I gotta go straight cause my arms’ll snaaaaaaaaaap!”

They’re maddening, those RVs. Do people really need to drive their two story house (I saw one of those the second day out) throughout America, drag an SUV behind that and a trailer with two ATVs behind that? Where the fuck are they going that they need all those vehicles?

The Marines aren’t as well equipped when they invade a nation.
