Lights

Posted on Tuesday 2 May 2006

I spend a lot of time looking at lighting and studying lighting and I don’t know anything at all. Which is kind of frustrating but what’s most silly is that when I see a picture that’s the first thing that pops into my head.

Today I was helping a coworker with his computer. He had a background image of a beautiful woman in a provocative pose. What I saw was that picture and the fact that there was a soft box reflected in her eyes.

A fucking soft box. It’s odd to suddenly have intimate knowledge of a mostly hidden facet of life. We all see pictures all time in this modern world and all we think about is if they’re effective or pretty or convey something we want to know. Now I look at that and I look at how it was constructed and it’s kind of nutty to be in both mental spaces at the same moment.

“Hey, she’s hot, and that soft box coupled with a lens filter is a little over the top. What ever happened to shadows?”
