Poor purchasing decisions

Posted on Sunday 30 July 2006

The last post reminded me of a short news bit I heard on NPR and later saw in the NY Times. I have no links as I’m too lazy too look this shit up so just pretend that you’ve heard the story too and you agree with all your heart.

The Israelites were firing rockets at cars fleeing southern Lebanon after they’d sent out leaflets telling people to leave their homes because they were going to bomb the area.

That’s great comedy in and of itself, but wait, it gets much better.

A plane fires a rocket at a car packed with an entire family, 10, 20, maybe 300 people in that car. The rocket hits and 3 people die.

The first thought I had was, “Those were some shitty fucking rockets. Why don’t they get the good ones? Killing a few people is only going to annoy the rest of the family.”

You could kill more with an M-80 in a crowded car than that rocket armed with high explosives did. From an engineering, cost-benefit analysis, perspective, it’s really sad to see their military so poorly run.

I hope the Knesset heard that story and is making sure the guy that bought those shiny new rockets gets his ass fired. Maybe they could send him a note attached to one of the rockets.

“You are fired! Why? Because this rocket didn’t kill your ass and your crappy buying isn’t killing anyone on the battlefield. Your last check will be shot at you attached to one of these useless rockets.”
