There is no point other than self preservation and perpetuation of that.
Animals don't have existential angst becaust they don't ponder why they eat, sleep, fuck, socialize, etc. They just are. Happiness is a byproduct of following those simple instincts of balancing self preservation and recreation.

Evil is any thwarting of these simple happinesses.
When one group feels their set of values to be "happy" are threatened by another groups values, Evil happens. Some small amounts of this are natural for balance (as in the food chain), but overall, harmony, acceptance, balance, adaptability ..... these are zen, peaceful, happyness.
People's instincts toward balance are all fucked up though. That's why people commit so much evil... always feeling threatened and/or wanting to conquest/spread their values, rather than "living and let living".

That's why getting into the woods (or being on a driveabout) is so soothing... back to simple purposes of life, just enjoying the act of being alive and maintaining your basic needs, and recreating at will. It's all you've got... and there's less conflict of values to fuck with that out there.

Any values people have, any driving purpose they set themselves to, is at core some elaborate or twisted derivation of thinking that purpose will help perpetuate their sense of safety of their "happiness".
Along the way, most people just totally forget about being happy, and the purposes become ends in themselves.

I thought lord of the rings conveyed all this pretty well.
