Existing no more is probably something all living things try to resist for as long as they can. Dying from disease or the elements is one thing, but the thought of being killed, murdered another. Giving up when ill, acceptance of the inevitable is a release. I am sure when at that point, when overwhelming pain, suffering, exhaustion whatever the circumstance, whether it be animal or human, it is welcomed and hopefully somewhat peaceful. Wanting suffering to end is something I am sure changes perspective on the "this is the end of the road for me" . Not being able to fight anymore allows the psyche to accept the inevitable. (except the guy swallowed by a shark the other day....he did fight back and lived to tell his tale).
Being fodder for anothers' food, or a victim of some maniac who likes to kill is just so against the will to live that almost any living thing will fight. That struggle to live is probably the most intense feeling anyone will ever have. Just watch animal planet big cat diaries sometime. Unfreakinbelievable.
