The same one who argued with me that atheism was the *only* way, who I predicted would one day have that subjective experience that I couldn't give him?

It's amazing how we change.  I'm now, to support my family, a father working in a soulless bureaucracy (Oregon Department of Transportation) and in 5 years or so, I'll have paid off my debt and built up enough vacation time to follow your original example (except I'm going to do it on a boat- and limit it to a family float from Bend to Nehalem Bay, down the Deschutes, Columbia, and Pacific Coast).
