Trained to fear reality

Posted on Sunday 9 December 2007

It’s a tad odd that we have to train kids not to fear reality. Think about it. Santa Clauses in the mall and stores and churches and wherever you find them, are kind of scary.

I’m scared of anyone who takes a job where they have screaming frightened kids placed on their laps all day long for a few seconds. That’s just creepy. And they do that in a bright red suit, with lots of facial hair as a disguise and cover so you can’t beat them up later on.

We as a people slowly train children not to fear what they instinctively fear and then they do the same thing to their kids in 20 or so years.

It’s an odd bit of culture that makes no sense. And makes me wonder what the kids see that the rest of us do not.
