Sitcom universe

Posted on Wednesday 26 December 2007

For the longest time the notion that the universe is composed of comedy has rattled around in my tiny brain. Think about all the idiocy that happens each and every day, to you, to everyone everywhere. Think about the war, the mayhem, the love and the relationships you have. Hell, just think about raising kids or having a job. It’s all so freaking ridiculous.

Lately though, this notion has morphed into a meta analysis of the universe composed of comedy idea. It’s not just raw unadulterated comedy…it’s a play, a show, a story, a sitcom…

Think about this. Have you ever met anyone that wasn’t a kind of caricature of that person? If you saw people do the things they do on a TV show it would have to be a comedy otherwise none of it would make any sense at all.

Sure, I’m using comedy in a very broad way. I’ll admit that and under my terms everything, even the worst horror is a kind of comedy because it’s so ridiculous that you can’t believe it and if something gets that ridiculous then it surely is a joke of some sort.

For instance, I’m a parody of wayward modern seeker looking for love and enlightenment in all the wrong places. I’ve been this caricature my whole life, even at age five, and only just noticed it this weekend. All hail life lessons brought down from on high and helped by fever dreams caused by the flu!

The tech blogs I read every day are parodies of tech blogs, the customers I help at the restaurant are parodies of customers, the musician sitting over there in this cafe is a kind of parody of the musician type, the women I meet are all a little kooky in exactly the same way.

That kind of stuff is exactly what happens in a sitcom. Everything in a sitcom is exactly like it should be and then it’s ratcheted up a notch to make it ridiculous. Life is that. Ratcheted up a notch to be just a bit ridiculous.

I wonder what happens when the writer’s strike starts to affect the world. I hope they saved up a lot of scripts otherwise we could be in for some weird times when we production gets shut down.
